sketch of "Green Top Cottage" by Architect Gary Justiss

On Novemeber 15, 2007, the Green Top Cottage achieved the "Greentopia" award and the overall "Greenest Cottage" award by the Children's Volunteer Health Network.

"The green top cottage is the greenest of all, with the least impact on the environment in its overall construction and long-term use. The cottage features the most significant green elements, including the fact that almost all the materials besides plants and toys are re-used. The framing, exterior, dead head cypress decking, doors, canopy wires, even the paint are left over from other jobs or salvaged.  The green canopy provides needed shade and is made from leftover sail cloth, the intercom is re-used hose and milk jugs. And the green roof demonstrates an emerging trend that is new to the Gulf coast but is increasingly being seen in urban areas as a way to reduce stormwater runoff and energy use in buildings. Congratulations to the team that created the green top cottage—they’re the greenest of all."
